A Fake Apology by Larry Johnson

by Benny on October 27, 2009

I have a sports pet peeve. I need to get it off my chest. It’s something that happens a handful of times per year. Sometimes it’s more depending on how stupid athletes are for that year.

I hate the pre-written agent/publicist/manager written apology.

I hate it mainly because it’s so fake. It feels completely not sincere. To me it feels like the player who acted out, took steroids, or got arrested, is not an adult enough to properly apologize from the heart.

They release an apology that we read online and it does not even sound like the same person who did something stupid.

Case in point, Larry Johnson this past weekend used Twitter to go off on his head coach

“My father got more creditentials than most of these pro coaches.”

That was followed by:

“My father played for the coach from “rememeber the titans”. Our coach played golf. My father played for redskins briefley. Our coach. Nuthn.”

That is on top of using a three letter gay slur he used to reporters in the locker room and on his Twitter.

First I do want to say that Larry Johnson is washed up. He’s frustrated that his team blows chunks. Frustration still does not allow his action to be excusable.

Then today he releases statement apologizing for his actions

“I regret my actions. The words were used by me in frustration., and they were not appropriate. I did not intend to offend anyone, but that is no excuse for what I said. I will do my best to learn from this.”

Does this even sound like the same person? The same one that spelled “briefely” instead of briefly? Or uses “nuthn” when he wants to say nothing? We are not dumb enough to believe Larry Johnson sat down to write this statement. I highly doubt he even read what his agent wrote. I would bet he didn’t even want to apologize but his agent said he needed to.

I bet you Larry Johnson would do what he did again if he was asked if he regretted it. I hope he’s not dumb enough to think that his Twitters aren’t picked up by the media.

I know the agent’s job is to clean up the shit that the player leaves behind. He’s trying to fix his client’s image. It doesn’t make us forgive the player or even believe he is really sorry for what happened.

If Larry Johnson wanted to apologize on air, he could call up the local radio station and they’d have him on right away to apologize. Then that apology would be re-aired all over the country. People may not forgive him but at least he’s a man and apologized publicly and not having the agent do it for him.
