What Patrick Swayze Has To Do With This Blog

by Benny on September 15, 2009

When I was thinking of what I should call my new sports blog, I went through the 100 most famous movie quotes in history to get inspriation. I wanted something different. There were a lot of great quotes such as:

#79 “Striker: “Surely you can’t be serious!” Rumack: “I am serious… and don’t call me Shirley.”

#8 “May the force be with you”.

#3 “You don’t understand! I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I could’ve been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am.”

#1 “Frankly dear, I don’t give a damn.”

Great quotes but I still felt like I was still searching for “the one”.

Then I came to #98 “Nobody puts ‘Baby’ in a corner.” That was it! I was sold. It was like seeing a girl for the first time and you know one day, she’s going to be your future ex-wife.

Not only are my two favorite movie quotes of all time from that movie (the other being “I carried a watermelon.”), I felt that quote expressed how I feel about sports.

If you recall, Patrick Swayze, aka Johnny Castle, walks into the ball room for the final performance. Baby, played by Jennifer Grey, is sitting the corner with her family. Swayze comes over to the table, looks at her overbearing dad and delivers the classic line. Hell yeah!

If you love sports as much as I do, it should never be put into a corner. Skip the lunch with your in-laws. Plan another night for that date with the girlfriend/wife/mistresses. Take the kids out all day Saturday because now it’s Sunday afternoon and the NFL playoffs are on. You’ve been waiting all week for today’s match-ups. Be a man and tell your woman, “Nobody Puts Sports in a Corner.” Grab that remote, turn on the TV, eat like a pig, rip farts, and sit on the couch for the next 10 hours watching all of the day’s game. You might have broken a remote by the end of the day, or said fuck about 1000 times but it’s the price we pay for passion.

Sad to hear Patrick Swayze lost his battle with cancer yesterday. Judging by the response on the internet, he will be missed. But he’ll always live on in this sports blog.

(0:35 is when he says it)
